About The Pinballs by Betsy Byars

In The Pinballs, three foster children—Carlie, Harvey, and Thomas J.—are brought together and must learn to navigate their difficult circumstances while living in a foster home.

Each character arrives with a different history and set of challenges. As they get to know one another, their experiences create opportunities for students to explore important themes including friendship, family, resilience, empathy, identity, and perseverance.

Although the novel addresses serious topics, its focus on relationships and the characters’ ability to persevere gives students opportunities to discuss both difficult experiences and the possibility of hope and positive change.

Why Teach The Pinballs in Your Classroom?

The Pinballs is more than a story students simply read and answer questions about. Its characters and themes can provide meaningful opportunities for critical thinking and classroom discussion.

Explore Important Themes

Students can examine themes such as:

  • Friendship and trust
  • Family and belonging
  • Perseverance and resilience
  • Empathy and understanding
  • Identity and personal growth
  • Overcoming adversity

These themes give students plenty to discuss, write about, and connect to the characters’ experiences.

Build Reading Comprehension Skills

A The Pinballs novel study can help students move beyond basic recall and think more deeply about what they’re reading.

Students can practice:

  • Identifying important details
  • Making inferences
  • Analyzing characters
  • Determining theme
  • Making text-based connections
  • Supporting ideas with evidence
  • Thinking critically about the story

Encourage Meaningful Discussion

The experiences of Carlie, Harvey, and Thomas J. naturally lend themselves to thoughtful conversations about friendship, family, difficult circumstances, and perseverance.

A structured novel study gives students opportunities to share their ideas while practicing important speaking, listening, and ELA discussion skills.
